Side and Back Glass

Side and back glass is a different job from a windshield, and the difference starts with the glass itself.

Tempered, not laminated

Your windshield is laminated. Two sheets of glass bonded either side of a clear plastic interlayer. That is why a windshield cracks and stays in one piece rather than collapsing into the cabin, and it is why a chip can be filled with resin.

Every other window in the car is tempered. It is heat treated during manufacture so that when it fails it breaks all at once, into thousands of small blunt cubes rather than long sharp shards. That is a deliberate safety design. It is also why there is never a repair option.

So if you are calling about a door window, a quarter glass or a back window, you are calling about a replacement. There is no cheaper middle path we are holding back from you.

What we actually replace

Door glass. The window that rolls up and down. The most common one, and usually the cheapest, because most are plain tempered panes with no electronics printed on them.

Quarter glass and vent glass. The small fixed panes ahead of or behind the door windows. Often bonded rather than clipped in, which makes them more work than the size suggests.

Back glass, sometimes called the rear windshield. The most involved of the three, because of what is printed on it.

Why back glass costs more

Look at your rear window. Those fine horizontal lines are the defroster grid, printed directly onto the glass and wired at both edges. On a lot of vehicles the radio antenna is printed into the same surface.

That means the replacement is not a generic pane cut to shape. It has to be the right part for your exact vehicle, with the grid in the right place, the correct number of elements, and the tabs where the harness expects them. Get it wrong and you have a rear window that fogs in January and a radio that fades out on the turnpike.

We order against your VIN rather than the year and model, because trim levels split more often on back glass than on anything else.

The cleanup is half the job

This is the part most people do not think about until afterwards.

When tempered glass lets go, it does not stay where it broke. Door glass drops down inside the door cavity, and thousands of fragments spread into the seat rails, the carpet pile, the seatbelt mechanism and the heater vents. A shop vacuum run over the carpet by a homeowner pushes as much down as it lifts out.

Done properly the door card comes off, the cavity gets cleared, and the interior is vacuumed before the new glass goes in rather than after. Skip it and you find glass in that car for a year, usually with a bare foot or a child’s hand.

If you are waiting on us after a break-in, tape a bin liner over the opening and leave the inside alone. We would rather do the cleanup than undo a rushed one.

What it costs

Most side and back glass runs between $200 and $650.

Plain door glass on a common vehicle sits at the low end. Back glass with a defroster grid, antenna and a heated wiper connection sits at the top. Bonded quarter glass lands in the middle because of the labour rather than the part.

There is one piece of good news on price. The forward-facing camera that drives lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking is mounted to the windshield. Replacing a side or back window does not disturb it, so none of this work carries the recalibration cost that a modern windshield does. On a 2022 vehicle that difference is several hundred dollars.

Break-ins, which is most of these calls

Most side glass calls in Broken Arrow are break-ins rather than accidents, and they follow a pattern. Passenger side, front or rear door, usually overnight, usually a car parked outside with something visible in it.

Two practical things. First, file the police report before you call us if you intend to claim, because insurers want the report number and it is harder to get retroactively. Second, check your deductible before filing at all. A door glass replacement is often less than a comprehensive deductible, in which case a claim costs you the whole amount anyway and leaves a record for nothing.

When we will tell you it is not worth doing yet

If the door mechanism is also damaged. Sometimes a forced entry bends the regulator or the track. Putting new glass into a mechanism that will chew it up is money you spend twice, so we check the travel before we fit anything.

If the vehicle is going to a body shop anyway. If the door skin is damaged and the car is already headed for collision repair, the glass usually belongs in that job rather than as a separate visit.

If it is a rare pane on an uncommon vehicle. Some older and low-volume vehicles have side glass that is genuinely hard to source. We will tell you that up front rather than taking a deposit and then hunting for weeks.
