Why we ask about the camera first
On a lot of vehicles built in the last ten years there is a camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror that runs lane keeping and automatic braking. Move the glass it looks through and it has to be recalibrated, or those systems read the road wrong. We do that recalibration with the glass, in the same visit. Shops that send it out turn a 90 minute job into a second appointment somewhere else, and you are the one driving between them.
When we tell you not to replace it
A chip smaller than a quarter, outside the strip the driver looks through, is usually a repair rather than a replacement. It is the cheaper job and it keeps the factory seal, which is the better outcome. We would rather tell you that on the phone than sell you glass you did not need.
