ADAS Camera Recalibration

If your car has a camera behind the mirror, the windshield is not just a window. It is the lens that camera looks through, and it has to be aimed.

What the camera is doing

Modern driver assistance systems read the road through a forward-facing camera mounted near the top centre of the windshield. That camera is calibrated at the factory to specific reference angles and distances so the software knows exactly where it is pointing.

Systems that depend on it:

• Lane keep assist and lane departure warning
• Forward collision warning
• Automatic emergency braking
• Adaptive cruise control
• Traffic sign recognition

All of them are measuring the world in degrees off a known centre. If the centre moves, every measurement after it is wrong.

Why replacing the glass moves it

The camera mounts to a bracket bonded to the windshield. Take the windshield out and put a new one in, and two things change slightly: where that bracket sits, and what the glass in front of the lens does to the light passing through it.

Neither change is large. Both are larger than the tolerance the system was calibrated to. That is the whole reason recalibration exists as a step.

This is also why glass choice matters more on a car with a camera than on one without. The optical quality and bracket placement of the replacement glass affect whether the camera can be brought back into spec at all.

Static, dynamic, or both

Static happens with the car stationary. We set a printed target board at a measured distance, height and centreline in front of the vehicle, level the car, and run the manufacturer procedure while the system re-learns its reference against a known object.

Dynamic happens on the road. The vehicle is driven at a specified speed on clearly marked road, often for a set distance, while the system re-learns from real lane markings.

Which one your car needs is set by the manufacturer, not by us. Some need static. Some need dynamic. A fair number of newer vehicles need both, which is the main reason the range on this job runs from about $150 to $600.

Three things worth knowing
